About the Book
Bullying is one of the most widespread and damaging forces in American life, and one of the most misunderstood. We tell ourselves it's a childhood problem — something that happens on playgrounds, something kids outgrow. But it doesn't stay in the schoolyard. It follows us into our workplaces, our institutions, and our relationships, and for most adults it's at work that it does its deepest damage.
I didn't plan to write this book; the subject came for me. I'd built a career studying how people judge and turn on one another — and none of it prepared me for what it was like to be the target. It began in 2015, and in ways large and small it has never fully stopped. When I couldn't carry it any longer, I did the only thing I know how to do: I turned it into a question. Bullied is what I found — drawing on my own experience, on research across psychology, neuroscience, and history, and on interviews with people across professions who lived it too.
This isn't a book about cruelty as a personal failing or a clash of personalities. It's about power, fear, and belonging — how bullying takes hold as a social process, how silence and fear let it spread until decent people become bystanders, and what it costs us when cruelty becomes the water we swim in. It's also a book about the people it targets: what the harm does to a person, and how they begin to reclaim themselves in its aftermath.
But understanding the pattern is also where the hope begins — because a process can be interrupted. Bullying unfolds over time, which means it's full of moments where its course can still change: a question asked, a silence broken, a person who refuses to look away. I call these acts social bravery, and the most important thing I've learned is that they're not a matter of personality or nerve. They're small, specific, and learnable — and because the pull of cruelty and the power of bravery are so closely matched, even one of them can tip the balance of a moment, a workplace, a culture.
So Bullied offers more than a diagnosis. It gives us a shared language for what we're seeing, a clear-eyed map of how cruelty spreads, and a practical sense of where each of us has more power than we think — as targets, as bystanders, as leaders, as friends. It's an invitation to see honestly what we've witnessed, taken part in, or survived, and to help build workplaces and communities where dignity is protected rather than punished. Let's make that our first brave act, together.
